Itinerary
[Day 1: Adelaide to Kangaroo Island]
– Today, there’s an early start to catch your 6.45 am SeaLink bus transfer from Adelaide CBD to the ferry terminal at Cape Jervis. Board the ferry for a 45-minute cruise to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island. Your Untamed Escapes Guide will meet you here and give you an overview of the adventure ahead for the next few days. Throughout your tour, you’ll also have the opportunity to become a citizen scientist and contribute to conservation efforts and research on the island in partnership with Passport to Recovery. You can download the App on the way over on the ferry, so you’re ready to go!
– Hop on board the bus and take a scenic coastal drive to Pennington Bay on the island’s south coast. With powerful swells rolling in, this beach is famed for its epic surf breaks. Climb the 500 steps to the top of Prospect Hill, one of the highest points on Kangaroo Island, for rewarding views and to get your bearings.
– Kangaroo Island is the world’s oldest bee sanctuary and is home to the only pure strain of Ligurian Bee in the world. Pop into a honey farm to learn all about these fascinating creatures and, of course, do a tasting. We’ll have a picnic lunch here before setting off to Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Oil Distillery and family-owned Dudley Wines, where you can sprawl out on their lush lawns and take in the incredible views over the ocean – the perfect place to relax and connect with your fellow travellers.
– Come late afternoon, arrive at our campsite, aptly named “Happiness”. Featuring private access to one of Kangaroo Island’s most stunning beaches – Antechamber Bay, you’ll be right at home here for the next two nights. Enjoy some free time to relax or take a walk down to the beach.Tonight, roll out your swag underneath the billions of stars of the Milky Way and feel an incredible connection with nature.
*Today, we drive approximately 240 km.
*Accommodation:Swag camping is on private property.

[Day 2: Kangaroo Island]
– After breakfast, it’s time for an incredible wildlife encounter. Seal Bay is home to the third-largest colony of endangered Australian sea lions, with around 800 calling the bay home. Join a 45-minute tour with the National Parks & Wildlife guides, who know pretty much everything there is to know about these beautiful creatures. Follow a boardwalk through the dunes down to the beach, and on the way, pass sea lions snoozing or even lying in the middle of the beach path and learn about conservation efforts to save this endangered species.
– Next, we’ll set our coordinates for the iconic Flinders Chase National Park, located at the northwestern point of the island. This park is renowned for its rock formations, impressive beaches, and abundant wildlife.
– At Admirals Arch, wander along a boardwalk as you soak up the serenity and keep your eyes peeled for the resident New Zealand fur seals. Marvel at the Remarkable Rocks, shaped by nature for over 500 million years. After a full day, head back towards camp for some free time to reflect and relax before dinner.
*Today, we drive approximately 350 km.

[Day 3: Kangaroo Island to Adelaide]
– Start the final day of your tour with a morning bush walk not far from camp, and after packing up, we’ll bid farewell to Happiness. Along the quiet north coast of the island, find spectacular bird life in the lagoon’s shallow, calm waters and trees. Here, we will find a spot to have our final meal together, followed by a nice stroll along the water, looking for the many different species that inhabit the American River.
– In the warmer months, weave your way through a labyrinth of caves before emerging at the beach voted best in Australia in 2023 – Stokes Bay. If the weather is right, enjoy some free time to snorkel among the rock pools or soak up the surrounding landscape.
– The National Trust of South Australia cares for the world’s natural and built heritage and relies on the support of volunteers to protect and preserve special places. So, this afternoon, roll up your sleeves for some conservation volunteering at Zelling Reserve—an important wildflower sanctuary preserving native flora on the eastern end of Kangaroo Island. Our activity depends on the time of year but could involve collecting seeds, weeding or planting trees whilst learning from their passionate volunteers.
– After a fabulous Kangaroo Island tour, arrive in Penneshaw for your 5.30 pm ferry back to the mainland. Once you arrive in Cape Jervis, your SeaLink bus connection will have you back in Adelaide at 9 pm.

Good to know

Australia has a relaxed attitude to standards of dress. However, depending on the time of year you are travelling, you may need to be prepared for the extremes. Temperatures in Southern Australia in winter (June, July, August) can get quite cold with daytime temperatures from 10 to18 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatures can reach zero. Please ensure you pack appropriately. You’ll be nice and snug when travelling in the vehicles and staying in your accommodation but for the outdoor activities you’ll need warm jackets and a raincoat, just in case. In summer, daytime temperatures can be extreme from November to April with temperatures generally in the 30s but sometimes reaching over 40 degrees Celsius. Be prepared to endure extra physical stress due to the heat at these times, especially while on walks. If travelling in summer we recommend that you bring loose, cool, cotton clothing to protect yourself from the harsh sun. A sun hat, sunscreen and sunglasses are a must.

With luggage restrictions you need to pack sensibility and light. Please ensure you have comfortable walking shoes, a hat, jacket, raincoat, sunglasses, water bottle or camelbak, swimmers, beach towel and of course a camera. For cooler months if you are camping we strongly recommend beanies, thermals, thick warm socks and gloves. It can get very cold during the night.

For hygiene and operational reasons we don’t offer sleeping bag hire on our camping trips so you will need to bring your own. You can purchase a sleeping bag for around $30 at any department or camping store in Australia. If you are doing quite a lot of camping whilst here we’d recommend investing in a better quality one that will keep you warm in extreme conditions. If you don’t require a sleeping bag after your tour, our guide will happily take it from you and donate it to charity.

We recommend packing sensibly as there is limited space in our vehicles. We have a 15kg maximum luggage limit and one day bag for the bus. If you are on a tour with a flight, please be aware they are operated by Rex who have 15kg luggage restriction per person plus one 7 kg carry on. However, upon presenting a valid itinerary or ticket, passengers with international connections are permitted 20 kg. For more details on Rex Baggage Allowance please visit their website. On our extended tours we highly recommend you leave some of your luggage at your return accommodation in Adelaide or Perth and just bring the essentials with you. You will find most hotels willing to do this free of charge if you have a return booking.

Passengers under the age of 18 years old need to be accompanied by an adult or caregiver. While all care is taken, the responsibility of children on tour rests entirely with the parent or caregiver. Please note that we accept children of all ages travelling on our private charter tours.

Please note that our tours operate in remote regions, and medical facilities may be difficult to access. Therefore, if passengers have any medical conditions or take any medication, they must provide full details and the nature of the condition when booking, including details of medication taken before the tour departs. We have no upper age limit, but we remind you that some of our trips can be physically demanding, and passengers must ensure they are suitably fit to allow full participation. In addition, we are not medical experts; therefore, you must ensure you have obtained proper medical advice at least two months before departure.

We highly recommend Travel Insurance and advise it covers cancellation, curtailment, personal liability and loss of luggage and personal effects.
