Bruny Island Adventure

  • Hobart
  • Full-day Tours
  • Natural Scenery
  • Tour in English

Overview

Also known as Lunawanna-allonah, Bruny Island is separated from mainland Tasmania by a deep green channel called the D’Entrecasteaux. Home to a small population of people who prefer to live on the wild side, Bruny is all about beaches, waves, forests and food.

We set off early from Hobart to beat the crowds, taking a scenic waterside drive and ferry crossing to arrive on the island.

First up? A section of the Cape Queen Elizabeth trail, an easy-moderate 2 hour (6.5km) return walk that delivers spectacular views from Mars Bluff of Miles Beach and Bruny Island Arch, a mind-boggling natural rock formation.

Next stop on our Bruny adventure is the isthmus joining North and South Bruny island – this area is known as The Neck and is the location of Trugannini Lookout. There are 279 stairs to the top where you will be well rewarded with fantastic views! We take a moment here to explore and spot the penguin burrows among the sand dunes.

Onwards from The Neck, learn about the local history at Two Tree Point before relaxing for lunch at Adventure Bay, a sheltered stretch of white sand and blue waves, with giant eucalyptus standing proud along the shore. Adventure Bay is the main “Hub” of Bruny Island and the location for our lunch break. You can relax on the beach with some free time and your own lunch, enjoy a swim if you are brave!. There are some take-away options and also a lovely cafe. Lunch is a relaxed and flexible break in Adventure Bay.

We re-group after lunch ready for a leisurely afternoon discovering Bruny Island’s celebrated artisan produce. We make stops at Bruny Island Chocolate Company (Award winning chocolate company specialising in handmade cream fudges, chocolate products), Bruny Island Honey (Free tastings of the natural honey produced on the Island and delicious honey ice cream), Bruny Island Cheese Co. (Artisan cheese-maker and Brewer, including cellar door tastings), and Get Shucked Oyster Farm (Producing oysters in the pure water of Great Bay).

After a full day of scenery, seafood, beaches and delicious tastes on the island – we return to Hobart around 5.00pm. The perfect day? We do say!

Departs: Hobart 7.00am
Returns: Hobart around 5.00pm
General Meet Point: 6.55am – Tasmanian Travel & Information Centre, 20 Davey Street, Hobart

What to Bring
– Closed sturdy shoes for walking.  We recommend runners, sneakers or hiking boots.
– Sensible clothes for outdoor conditions.  Warm layers are a great idea, waterproof rain jackets just in case.  As you will be carrying everything you need for the day, please ensure you have a comfortable backpack/day pack.
– We do recommend good shoes and long pants for protection from some sections of coastal scrub and grasses.
– Large water bottle, snacks, lunch (or buy it on the day)
– Sense of adventure

Special considerations
– Our tours are active and visit National Parks and wild areas that involve some walking. We focus on the great short walks of Tasmania.  Although most of the walks are classified as easy, a suitable level of general health & fitness and physical abilities is essential.  All tour participants will be participating in outdoor, active activities and therefore subject to the outdoor weather conditions of the day.
– We educate all our guests on Minimal Impact Bushwalking and the Leave No Trace policy’s before entering our National Parks. We provide accurate interpretation, and keep wildlife disturbance to a minimum by viewing from appropriate distances and informing our guests how to view wildlife with patience and respect. Activities are always confined to tracks and boardwalks to minimise negative impacts.

Good to know

Can I bring luggage on board the tour day? Please only bring hand luggage/day pack on tour, otherwise we won't all fit! We do not travel with luggage onboard the day tour vehicles. We expect that each traveler will have a day pack only to store your daily essentials such as drinks, snacks, warm jacket etc. while on tour for the day. No other luggage is able to be carried on our day tours. If you are moving hotels or have onwards travels you will need to ensure this is stored for the day at your hotel/accommodation prior to boarding the tour bus. If you attend a tour with luggage without consultation with our Reservations Team prior to travel, you may be refused entry to the tour vehicle. Please contact our team in advance of your tour to discuss options.

We anticipate you will have 1 x small piece of luggage or backpack to store for the day, + you will have your hand luggage/day pack for the tour day. If you have more than this, please contact our team to check whether this can be accommodated.

Airport Drop Off? We do not offer airport drop off on our tour days. Most tours arrive back to Hobart / Launceston around 5.30 – 6.00pm, returning to the same location as your pick up. If you have an onward flight that evening, we would recommend ensuring it leaves 8.00pm onwards.

Is food and drink included in the tour? We do not supply lunch, snacks or beverages on our tours but we do stop along the way for you to purchase food to suit your budget and taste. This is usually a Bakery style stop in a regional town along the way to the main destination for the day. You will then be able to enjoy a lunch break during the tour day, usually somewhere scenic and suitable for a rest stop. You are also welcome of course to bring along your own packed lunch to enjoy on the day. If you have special dietary requirements it may be better to bring your own prepared lunch /snacks. Please bring a large water bottle for the day.
